In Wandering, Eufalia C. Paz transforms the Trans-Mongolian Railway into a moving threshold to be inhabited. Travelling from Moscow to Beijing, Paz photographs only from the window of the train wagon, accepting the glass, movement, distance, and partial obstruction as constitutive part of her frame. Through it, Siberia, Zima, Lake Baikal, the Gobi, and Beijing appear as events where the horizon is repeatedly interrupted by motion itself.
The poetics of transit against the culture of arrival. Wandering locates meaning in the interval, in the suspended time between departure and destination, where image, memory, and anticipation embrace each other as afterimages of attention, fragile, monochromatic, almost negative… The book is more of an anti-map than a travelogue. Paz proposes wandering as a methodology of non-ownership, a discipline of looking without capture.
The book stages the journey as a condition of perception itself, the body crossing geography while the mind drifts through its own systems of memory, loss, and projection. What is included in the book is the quiet intelligence of passing through through the spectacle of distance.
